A hand decorated testimony from the workers and sympathisers of the Red Cross presented to Julie Tomlinson for her services given to the Nelson District branch of the Red Cross 1919. The following is a quote from the testimony "you have given a memorable example of public spirit and patriotism which has brought credit not only to yourself but to the whole Nelson District". Julie Annie Tomlinson, c1876-1962, was involved with many Nelson organisations such as the Red Cross for which she was secretary during WW1. She was awarded the MBE in 1958.

Biographical History
|
Julie Tomlinson was the daughter of Mr William Tomlinson and Mrs Julie Sarah Tomlinson nee Kingdon. Mrs Julie Tomlinson's parents were Samuel and Julia Anna Kingdon nee Budd. Julie Annie Tomlinson attended Nelson College for girls and became a masseuse. She was involved with many Nelson organisations such as the Red Cross which she was secretary for during World War one, Doctor Barnado's Homes, Friends of the Turnbull library, The Overseas League, The Nelson Women's Club and the Nelson Horticultural Society, the later of which she was made a life member in 1959. She was also involved with the establishment of Melrose House. She was awarded the MBE in 1958 and donated the Tomlinson silver to the Nelson Provincial Museum. She died in 1962 aged 86 years old.
