Cuff bands
Description
One of a pair of cuff bands made of plaited hair with mounts of gilt. Hair was used as a lasting keepsake as it did not decompose. It was seen as a symbol of life. Each locket contains an image. This one is of an adult male and female, the other cuff band is of three children (two boys and one girl). These are mourning bands from the estate of Ernest Alfred Smart of Nelson.
