Educating Women in Nelson
An education, a career and then the vote
It took more than a petition to gain Suffrage for women in Aotearoa. Many of the women who fought for the right to vote, first fought for the right to higher education for young women.
To celebrate Suffrage 125 we are looking at education for girls in Nelson and some of the trailblazers who paved the way for higher education of girls and subsequently suffrage.
This exhibition was developed under the umbrella of the Ministry's 125th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in Aotearoa programme.
Further background information about this initiative can be found on the Ministry for Women website.
