Tyree Studio Collection: 182161

On a sunny afternoon in July 1906 the Union Steam Ship Company's coastal passenger steamer Rotoiti, carrying 800 passengers, left the wharf in Nelson. At 1.43 pm on July 30 the bow of the steamer broke through the ceremonial ribbon to mark the opening of the Cut. This much awaited new entrance to Nelson harbor was open for business; vessels would no longer need to negotiate the shallow waters around the end of the Boulder Bank. The opening of the Cut would be of great benefit to Nelson's shipping industry and commerce.

The Nelson Provincial Museum is fortunate to have in its collection a piece of ribbon (see the image below) commemorating the opening of the Cut as well as images which document the occasion. The ribbon was donated to the museum earlier this year and thought to be that which made up the ceremonial decoration which can be seen in the photograph above. The Tyree Studio image was taken at the moment the Rotoiti passed through the Cut breaking the ribbon.

<img src="http://www.nelsonmuseum.co.nz/images/enews/NPM2011.19.1-3.jpg" alt="Ribbon. Donations can be made from around New Zealand and overseas. The site is totally secure and accepts most credit cards.

We would very much like to replace our present microfilm reader, that has reached the end of its useful life, with a new one that can also be used to create digital records of the microfilms. Nelson Provincial Museum has a wonderful collection of microfilms that include early newspapers and records of the early days of the Colony of Nelson. This project has a cost close to $30,000 and to state it quite openly we do not have that in the forthcoming 2012-13 budget.

The Glass Plate Negative Project fundraising page has images from the project and includes a link to the Museum's Collections Online site, where almost 15,000 of the over 35,000 plates processed so far are available for viewing and research. Thanks to the donations received so far, a grant from the NZ Lottery Grants Board and the generosity of a local benefactor the Glass Plate Negative Project has secure funding for at least the next twelve months.

When you donate please specify whether you would like your donation to be applied to the Glass Plate Negative Project or to the replacement of our Microfilm reader.

While you are on Fundraise Online you can email it to friends and family who you think might be able to offer support for the project. Donations by New Zealand citizens are tax deductible, and a letter of thanks and a receipt is issued for every donation.

Donate online here:

Download a Donation Form

You can also download a donation form here or collect one from the Museum in Nelson or the Research Facility in Isel Park, Stoke.
