Kia ora tātou!
Join us on this very special occasion for an early start to call in the beginning of Matariki, the Māori New Year.
Lead by renown practitioners Brian Flintoff and Bob Bickerton we will be bringing out selected taonga pūoro from the Museum’s collection to make their voices heard across whakatu.
As in previous years, we will assemble in front of the Nelson Provincial Museum for a karakia to then make our way to pikimai (the Nelson Cathedral hill) where the taonga pūoro will be played. The ceremony will be closed with a free morning tea at the Museum, kindly sponsored by Nelson City Council.
All welcome. Bring your own taonga pūoro and join us or just enjoy being a part of the event!
Date: 25. June 2019
Time: 6:30 am - 8:00 am
Location: Nelson Provincial Museum, Cnr Hardy & Trafalgar Streets
Free event, no bookings required
Morning tea provided, kai kindly sponsored by Nelson City Council
Over the last year the Nelson Provincial Museum in conjunction with local iwi has embarked on a journey of activating its significant handling collection of taonga pūoro, getting them played on special occasions, and teaching the community how to make their own and how to play them in regular, free workshops.
