Join us at the museum for an update on the ARC (Archive, Research and Collections) Project and the long-term storage solution for the museum's collection.

Isel Park Facility

For more than 20 years, it has been clear that our current Isel Park facility is no longer fit for purpose. The building is too small for the growing collection, it suffers from leaks, has asbestos, and cannot safely care for the region’s $20 million nationally and internationally significant collection.

After extensive consideration of different options, the Nelson Provincial Museum is proud to present revised plans for a new purpose-built ARC facility, to be built on a Greenfield Site in Richmond, Tasman.

The new facility will:

• Provide safe, modern storage that meets international standards

• Create 30% more room for future growth of the collection

• Improve access for exhibitions, researchers, schools and whānau

• Ensure appropriate cultural care for taonga Māori and Nelson Tasman’s diverse heritage collections

This plan reduces the estimated cost of the project by $6 million (from the original $14.9 million budget) and still delivers a fit-for-purpose facility that will ensure the long-term preservation of the collection.

The project will not cost ratepayers any more money. Three million dollars has already been earmarked in 2018 by both councils, to fund the project. Any shortfall will come through fundraising and sponsorship.

This new facility is about safeguarding the collection for the future and strengthening exhibitions, and school programmes. The museum with its amazing exhibitions and education programmes will remain on Trafalgar Street in Nelson.

Please join as at the Museum to hear from the team about this exciting project, and to ask any questions about this important community project.
