Learn the story of New Zealand’s first Chinese immigrant, Wong Ah Poo Hoc Ting (Appo Hocton) who arrived in Nelson in 1842.

Appo Hocton’s story is one of migration,voyaging,  diversity, integration, family and acceptance.

The students will learn the story of Appo’s arrival in Nelson, his determination and industry in building a successful life in this region, and the indelable mark he has left on this community.

Photographs are used to bring the story to life.

For younger students, a Chinese art activity follows the lesson.
