Tips for planning a class/group visit to the Museum
-
Our Education Team loves to weave together experiences that include taonga (treasures), local stories, people, environment, and histories; whilst also utilising cutting-edge information, digital technology and hands-on activities, to spark interest and curiosity in the minds of our region’s ākonga.
Ākonga can also accompany our Educators to local sites of historic, natural or cultural interest for specific programmes.
The Nelson Provincial Museum has a huge number of collection items telling the stories of human cultures and histories as well as those of the natural world.
The Museum’s galleries display objects, art works, photographs and text to help us to create stimulating and enjoyable learning experiences.

We love to collaborate with you!
Our clever team can customise the experiences to enhance the particular learning objectives that your ākonga aim to meet.
Please contact us well in advance of your visit to organise this and to advise us of any special requirements anyone of your group may have.

Kaitiaki (Adult Guardians) & School Group Supervision
The museum is a public space and will be shared with other visitors during your visit. We ask all kaitiaki (adult guardians) to help ensure students behave respectfully so that everyone can enjoy the museum experience.
Please note: School teachers and accompanying adults maintain ultimate legal responsibility for student supervision, safety, and behaviour management at all times.
Recommended Adult-to-Student Supervision Ratios
Early Childhood Education (ECE) Ages 0–5, 1 adult : 3–4 children
Lower PrimaryYears 1–4
1 adult : 5–6 students
Upper Primary / Intermediate
Years 5–8 1 adult : 7–10 students
Secondary Years 9–13
1 adult : 10–15 students
These ratios reflect current museum sector best practice and help ensure a safe and enjoyable learning experience for all visitors.
The Role of the Museum Educator
The Museum Educator facilitates learning programmes and provides expertise about the museum, its collections, and exhibitions.
Their presence does not reduce the number of supervising adults required for safety ratios.
The Role of Classroom Kaiako (Teacher) and Kaitiaki (Adult guardians / guides)
ECE/School kaiako and the adults accompanying the group are responsible for:
Active supervision of students throughout the visit
Managing student behaviour
Accompanying students to toilet area when required
Supporting students with individual needs
Administering medication or first aid if necessary
Assisting with emergency procedures and evacuations
Students Requiring Additional Support
Students with significant medical needs, severe allergies, neurodivergent support requirements, or one-to-one behavioural support needs should be accompanied by a dedicated adult. These adults are additional to the recommended supervision ratios above.
Kaitiaki (adult guides) Attending with Babies or Toddlers
Adult helpers who bring babies or toddlers (except during ECE visits) are welcome; however, they are not counted as part of the required adult-to-student supervision ratio and will not supervise other students within the group.
NO Food or Drink
No food or drink may be consumed anywhere on museum grounds unless specifically authorised by museum staff.

Nau mai, haere mai! Welcome!
• Parking is not always easy in the CBD so make sure you have time to find a park before the programme starts.
• Please line up outside and sit on the seats alongside the Trafalgar St windows. Your Museum Educator will come outside and welcome you.
• Please have the numbers of your students (by year group) and visiting adults, ready to pass on to the Museum Educator.
• Ākonga may be asked to remove shoes, hats and bags, which will be stored safely inside the Museum.
*Please avoid bringing pushchairs or buggies if accompanying a class, we do not have a lot of “parking space.”
*No food or drink to be consumed in the museum.

Te Haumaru tuatahi! Let’s think safety first!
