Hou Rongo: Moriori, Music and Manawa
Suitable for Years 5–8
Hou Rongo: Moriori, Music and Manawa is a multisensory exhibition celebrating the culture of New Zealand’s indigenous Moriori people. Blending ancient wisdom with innovative technology, Hou Rongo transports visitors to Rēkohu (the Chatham Islands), amid the realms of the etchu (deities).
Students will experience captivating videos, evocative soundscapes, and scent reconstructions, and discover replicas of the only two known Moriori flutes. This groundbreaking exhibition illuminates the cultural vibrancy of the Moriori people and their deep connection to the natural world.
During this visit, students will learn about the revitalisation of Moriori culture in present times and the message of hope for all people: “We can’t change history, but we can start shaping the future.” (Hayden Preece). The session will begin in the Education Space before moving into the exhibition. Students will then work in groups of 4–5 to rotate through activities in the gallery, with supplementary activities provided by Whaea Kelz. This experience can be used to begin an inquiry into Moriori culture, or as an additional tool within an existing learning unit.
