Discovering Whakatū I Ngā hikoi / Walks

We offer a range of walks outside of the Museum that can be tailored to specific needs and ages.


City Walk 

All age groups

This hikoi starts at the Museum and travels up Trafalgar Street, to Piki Mai, the Cawthron Steps (The Church Steps), and into South Street.
Ākonga (learners) move in groups with a pakeke awhi (adult helper) using laminated books of historic photographs of Nelson.
Stories of the old city are told and ākonga complete a worksheet and observational drawings as a record of the learning.
This is a guided walk with a Museum Educator or can be led by the classroom teacher.

Discover the many amazing sculptures that line the banks of the Maitahi River. Learn about the artists, their messages, and the technologies used in their art works.

The Aratuna-Normanby Bridge and Queen’s Gardens

Tau 3-8, Years 3-8

A guided lesson with a focus on tuna (eels) and their significance to local Māori in the area of the Maitahi River and Queen’s Gardens.

Includes a hikoi (walk) through the Queen’s Garden, the roto-tuna (eel pond), the legend of Tunaroa, the Aratuna-Normanby Bridge art work and waiata by Brian Flintoff.

This is a guided walk with a Museum Educator

Integrated links with Conservation, Technology, Science and Te Ao Māori, Aotearoa NZ Histories and The Arts.
