Visiting the Museum with a class or school group

Nau mai, hāere mai ki te Pupuri Taonga o Te Tai Ao! Welcome to the Nelson Provincial Museum!

Waiho i te toipoto, kaua i toiroa.

Let us keep close together, not far apart

Our education service is supported by the Ministry of Education and is aligned with Te Whāriki, the NZ Curriculum and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.

Our unique learning experiences are not usually possible in a school classroom environment.

Our Education Team is dedicated to providing accessibility, authenticity, inclusivity and active engagement for all ākonga (learners).

Read below to find out about planning your class visit!

Tips for planning a class/group visit to the Museum

  • Our Education Team loves to weave together experiences that include taonga (treasures), local stories, people, environment, and histories; whilst also utilising cutting-edge information, digital technology and hands-on activities, to spark interest and curiosity in the minds of our region’s ākonga.

Ākonga can also accompany our Educators to local sites of historic, natural or cultural interest for specific programmes.

The Nelson Provincial Museum has a huge number of collection items telling the stories of human cultures and histories as well as those of the natural world.

The Museum’s galleries display objects, art works, photographs and text to help us to create stimulating and enjoyable learning experiences.
